Our trip to White Mountain in August 2005. White Mountain is one of the only peaks over 14,000 feet in California located outside of the Sierra Nevada Mountains. White Mountain is located in the White Mountains on the east side of the Owens Valley with a perfect view of the Sierras. The Ancient Bristle Cone Pine Forest home to the oldest living organisms on earth, is also located on the road to the trail head of White Mountain.
If you're interested in checking out this hike here is a little beta for your trip. The trail is fourteen miles round trip and starts around 12,000 feet. If you are used to high altitudes you can bike the first five miles and hike the last to shorten your trip. This definitely worked well for us. If you're not acclimated to high altitudes then you should plan on camping at the campground just outside the Bristlecone Forest to get yourself used to the altitude then do the hike the next morning. But either way be prepared for a pretty strenuous trek and a bit of a drive on dirt roads.
